Trolley Square is an area where young professionals can enjoy the convenience of a city with the friendly atmosphere of a village. Within walking distance are unique shops, restaurants, and some of the liveliest nightspots in the city. A few blocks north takes you to the large Rockford Park where dog owners congregate on warm days to allow their pets to run leash free in the “bark park”. The centerpiece of Rockford Park is the historic Rockford Tower (pictured on the left). A Wilmington landmark, the 100-year-old stone water tower is located amid rolling hills and vistas offering beautiful views of the city.
Residents can also enjoy the Brandywine Park which runs along either side of the Brandywine River. Residents can enjoy a stroll or jog along the river, picnic lunch, and other activities among the park’s monuments, formal gardens, and natural areas. Brandywine Park also features tennis courts (pictured lower right) and a basketball court.
Trolley Square also has a rich history. From 1864 until the 1970’s, the city’s horse-drawn trolleys, electric trolleys and buses were kept in a huge bard fronting on Delaware Avenue at the corners of DuPont and Clayton streets. The barns lay vacant after the buses were relocated to under I-95. In 1978, the barns were demolished for a shopping center dubbed Trolley Square.
Conveniently located within walking distance of the central business district of Wilmington, Trolley Square is also a major stop along the main bus line. Wander the shops on the Art Loop and enjoy the galleries, meet your friends for a drink at one of the popular cafes and water-holes or enjoy the natural beauty of Brandywine Park. You will always find a reason to come home to Trolley Square.
